The Greatest Manager in the World

My favorite author is Og Mandino who wrote “The Greatest Salesman in the World,” as well as many other international best sellers. Based on my 15 years in management and interviews with dozens of phenomenal managers, I created the following traits of "The Greatest Manager in the World."   This serves as an outline of my coaching work with managers.  Please email me to set up a consultation to discuss coaching for you and/or your team of managers.

  • The Greatest Manager in the World helps create and implement a mission & vision that is simple yet aspirational.
  • Helps create a culture of respect, trust, honesty, transparency, fun, caring,
  • Creates a Strategic Plan for his company/department in order to achieve the mission. This SP is the “roadmap” for the company/department and includes the budget/forecast, Marketing and Sales Plan, Goals and an Action Plan to achieve these goals.
  • Knows that “people are everything.” Thus, he places unwavering emphasis on Recruiting, Hiring, Orientating, and Training the best.
  • Cares about his people. He learns about their dreams, goals, family, troubles. He has compassion and empathy. This is genuine and authentic because he loves his people.
  • Sets crystal-clear expectations for himself and his team. He communicates these expectations in writing and verbally.
  • Is extremely visible. He may spend up to 40% of his time in his office. Otherwise he is walking around…Conversing, Observing, Spot Training, Giving Praise, & Building Relationships.
  • Is relentless about measuring performance. He provides spot feedback on a regular basis and sits with his direct reports 1-1 at least biweekly.
  • Is a consummate Trainer. He provides this himself and he brings in experts. He also cares about the continuing education of himself and his team.
  • Believes in CANI (Constant and Never-ending Improvement.) He celebrates success with his team AND knows that all can always be better. Perfection can never be attained, but the pursuit is fun and never ending!
  • Is a servant leader. His team works with him, not for him. He’s not a “boss” simply pointing & directing. He jumps in and leads by example. He asks, “What do you need?” and “How can I help you?” He then delivers on the answers swiftly.
  • Is a natural optimist. He’s happy and believes in people. He trusts naturally.
  • Is no fool. He’s not a wimp or pushover. He’s confident, observant, unafraid, firm in his convictions. He is also a competitor. He has an insatiable appetite to be the best and win. He commands and demands the best from others. He does not tolerate mediocrity…of himself or others.
  • Conducts himself to a higher standard like the military. Principles such as honor, dignity, morality, honesty are not just buzz words, but a code to live and manage by.
  • Doesn’t makes mistakes. (Ha!) And when he does, he comes forth and claims responsibility. He says “I’m sorry” when appropriate and he is transparent. If goals are not met or a member of her team is underperforming, he first looks in the mirror and asks himself, “What can I do better?”
  • Praises others. He redirects praise of himself to his team. It’s always his responsibility if something goes wrong and always other’s kudos when things go right.
  • Consistent and predicable. He knows his people need this in order to trust him. And yet he is not rigid, rather flexible and pliable.
  • An action-taker. He is decisive and swift. He simply does not procrastinate. This is weak and TMITW is strong.
  • Delivers “Profits through people.” People are everything. It’s all about the team and he seeks diversity, embraces different viewpoints, encourages respectful debate. He is a collaborator
